Ports – Ghana

Ghana, located on the west coast of Africa, has several key ports that play an important role in its economy, international trade and transport system. In this article, we will look at Ghana’s main ports, their location and functions.

  1. Port of Tema: One of Ghana’s largest and most important ports, it is located in the city of Tema, near the capital Accra. The Port of Tema handles a significant portion of the country’s imports and exports, including petroleum, cocoa, gold, timber and manufactured goods. It has well-developed infrastructure for handling containerised and general cargo and is a key transport and logistics hub for the country.
  2. Port of Takoradi: Ghana’s second largest port, located on the south-west coast of the country at Takoradi. The Port of Takoradi specialises in exporting minerals such as bauxite, manganese and gold, as well as handling timber, cocoa and other commodities. The port plays an important role in supporting the extractive industries and economy of the region.
  3. Port of Sekondi: Located in the town of Sekondi, near Takoradi. This port is mainly used for fishing and local trade. The Port of Sekondi plays an important role in supporting the fishing industry and local economy.
  4. Port of Elmina: It is located on the southern coast of Ghana in the city of Elmina. This port is also used for fishing and local trade, supporting the economy and supply of the region.
