Ports – Fiji

Fiji, located in the South Pacific Ocean, has several key ports that play an important role in its economy, international trade and tourism. In this article, we look at Fiji’s main ports, their locations and functions.

  1. Port of Suva: The country’s main port, located in the capital Suva on the island of Viti Levu. The Port of Suva is Fiji’s largest and busiest port. It handles container, cargo and passenger vessels. The port plays a key role in international trade, exporting agricultural commodities such as sugar and copra, and importing manufactured goods and equipment.
  2. Port of Lautoka: Fiji’s second largest port, located on the west coast of the island of Viti Levu. The Port of Lautoka specialises in sugar, Molasses and timber exports. It also handles containerised cargo and plays an important role in the international trade and economy of the country.
  3. Port of Levuka: Located on the island of Ovalau. Port of Levuka is historically important as it was the first colonial port in Fiji. Today it caters for fishing and cargo vessels, playing an important role in the local economy and fishing industry.
  4. Port of Savusavu: Located on the island of Vanua Levu. The Port of Savusavu is known for its natural hot springs and is a popular destination for yachtsmen and cruise ships. It plays an important role in tourism and local trade.
  5. Port of Malolo Lailai: Located on the island of Malolo Lailai in the Mamanuta group of islands. This port caters mainly to tourist vessels and yachts, contributing to the development of tourism in Mamanuta and Yasawa Islands.
  6. Port Denarau: Located on Denaura Island near the town of Nandi on Viti Levu Island. Port Denaura is a major tourist port catering for cruise liners and yachts. It is also the starting point for excursion trips to the islands of Mamanuta and Yasawa.
