Ports – Guatemala

Guatemala, located in Central America and with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, has several key ports that play an important role in its economy and international trade. In this article, we will look at Guatemala’s main ports, their locations and functions.

  1. Puerto Quetzal: This is Guatemala’s largest and most important port, located on the Pacific coast. The Port of Quetzal serves container, general cargo and cruise ships. It plays a key role in international trade, exporting commodities such as coffee, sugar and bananas, and importing petroleum, manufactured goods and consumer goods.
  2. Puerto San José: Located on the Pacific coast, southwest of the capital, Guatemala City. The Port of San José is used for fishing as well as cargo handling and is an important port for the local trade and fishing industry.
  3. Puerto Champerico: Located on the southwest coast of the Pacific Ocean. This port plays a significant role in the fishing and agricultural industries, supporting the local economy and transporting products.
  4. Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla: Located on the Caribbean coast. The Port of Santo Tomás de Castilla is an important cargo port serving containerised and general cargo. It plays a key role in the export of agricultural products such as bananas and tropical fruits, and in the import of manufactured goods and equipment.
  5. Puerto Barrios: Located on the Caribbean coast, next to the port of Santo Tomas de Castilla. This port is also an important trading hub for Guatemala, serving cargo and passenger ships. It plays a significant role in the export and import of various goods, including agricultural products and manufactured goods.
