The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country rich in natural resources and has several key ports that play an important role in its economy and international trade. Although the country is landlocked, it has several river ports and one seaport on the narrow Atlantic coast. In this article, we will look at the DRC’s main ports, their location and functions.
- Matadi Port: Located on the Congo River, it is the DRC’s main seaport. Matadi Port is approximately 148 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and is an important hub for importing and exporting goods such as petroleum products, agricultural commodities and manufactured goods.
- Port of Boma: It is also located on the Congo River near the Atlantic Ocean coast. The Port of Boma serves both cargo and passenger ships and plays an important role in trade and transport of goods to the region.
- Port of Kinshasa: Located in the DRC capital, Kinshasa, on the Congo River. The Port of Kinshasa is a major river port and an important logistical hub for inland trade and transport of goods along the river.
- Kisangani Port: Located on the Congo River in the eastern part of the country. This river port plays an important role in transporting goods and materials to the eastern regions of DRC.
- Mbandaka Port: Located on the Congo River in the western part of the country. Mbandaka Port serves inland water transport and plays a significant role in regional trade.
- Port of Kalaw: Located on the Kasai River, a tributary of the Congo River. The Port of Kalaw transports goods and raw materials to the central regions of the country.
- Port of Isiro: Located in the north-eastern part of DRC on the Mongo River. This port serves inland transport and plays an important role in regional trade and supply.
