Ports – Ecuador

Ecuador, located on the west coast of South America, has several key ports that play an important role in its economy, international trade and tourism. In this article, we will look at Ecuador’s main ports, their location and functions.

  1. Port of Guayaquil: Located in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil, on the Guayas River. The Port of Guayaquil is the most important and busiest port in the country, serving both containerised and general cargo. It plays a key role in the export and import of goods such as bananas, cocoa, coffee and manufactured goods.
  2. Port of Puerto Bolívar: Located in the province of El Oro in southern Ecuador. The Port of Puerto Bolivar specialises in banana exports, being one of the largest ports in the world for exporting this product. It also handles other agricultural commodities and industrial cargo.
  3. Port of Manta: Located on the central coast of Ecuador in the province of Manabi. The Port of Manta is an important commercial port and handles container, general and fishing vessels. It also plays a significant role in tourism development by receiving cruise ships.
  4. Port of Esmeraldas: Located on the northern coast of Ecuador in the province of Esmeraldas. The Port of Esmeraldas handles a variety of cargoes, including petroleum and petroleum products, timber, and agro-industrial goods. It also serves as an important hub for the export of manufactured goods.
  5. Port of Santa Elena: Located on the Santa Elena Peninsula. This port serves both fishing and commercial vessels, playing an important role in the fishing industry and regional trade.
  6. Port of Bahia de Caraquez: Located on the central coast of Ecuador in the province of Manabi. This port serves fishing and cargo vessels, contributing to the local economy and trade.
