Guyana, located on the northeast coast of South America, has several key ports that play an important role in its economy and international trade. In this article we will look at Guyana’s main ports, their location and functions.
- Port of Georgetown: It is the country’s largest and most important port, located in the capital city of Georgetown, on the banks of the Demerara River. The Port of Georgetown handles both cargo and passenger vessels. It plays a key role in international trade, handling exports of commodities such as sugar, rice, bauxite, gold and timber, as well as imports of manufactured goods, food and petroleum products.
- Port of New Amsterdam: Located on the east coast of Guyana, on the Berbice River. The Port of New Amsterdam serves local cargo ships and plays an important role in regional trade and transport of goods such as rice, sugar and agricultural products.
- Port of Linden: Located on the Demerara River, south of Georgetown. The Port of Linden specialises in the export of bauxite and plays an important role in Guyana’s mining industry. It also caters for cargo ships carrying other minerals.
- Port of Essequibo: Located on the Essequibo River, one of Guyana’s largest rivers. This port serves local cargo and fishing vessels, supporting the regional economy and trade.
